Verona ZTL: Where to Park and Walk 10 Minutes to the Centre

June 21, 2026

You have half a day and you want to drive straight into the heart of Verona. You set the sat-nav, follow the signs, and then — a blue notice board, a camera, an electronic gate. Welcome to the ZTL of the city of the Scaligeri: one of the most extensive access-control systems in northern Italy, active since 2005 and updated several times up to the 2026 regulations. Fines start at €98.50 and arrive without warning, weeks after your visit, when you have already forgotten that narrow alley. The good news? Ten minutes on foot from the right car park and you are surrounded by the scent of ancient stone and morning coffee.

What is the Verona ZTL and when do the gates activate

The ZTL of Verona's historic centre wraps around the inner bend of the Adige, bounded by the Ponte Scaligero at Castelvecchio and Ponte Aleardi, Via Ponte Aleardi, Via Pallone, Largo Divisione Pasubio, Via degli Alpini, Piazza Bra, Via Roma, Via Daniele Manin, Vicolo San Silvestro and Corso Castelvecchio. In plain terms: the entire monumental area, from Castelvecchio to the Arena, is off-limits to anyone without a permit.

Those without a permanent permit may only enter by booking in advance through an app, for a maximum of four entries per month. Bookable time slots are Monday–Friday 10:00–18:00 and 20:00–23:00, while on Saturdays and public holidays only 10:00–13:30. Tourists staying in hotels can enter by providing their licence plate number to the property.

It is worth stressing: the control system does not distinguish how long you stay, only whether you have passed through a gate. Not even "just a minute to drop off the luggage" goes unnoticed. The penalty for an irregular entry amounts to €98.50 when the notice is delivered in person at the recipient's home address.

An important development for 2026: the city council has approved the new Piano urbano della sosta (Urban Parking Plan), an instrument that updates a framework unchanged since 1999. The measure will come into force progressively from spring, with a first intervention in the Borgo Trento neighbourhood, and is accompanied by the creation of a new ZTL in the Santo Stefano district, in Veronetta.

Car parks outside the ZTL from which the centre is a ten-minute walk

The strategy of the seasoned Verona visitor is straightforward: leave the car just outside the controlled perimeter, put on comfortable shoes and walk. Verona offers several options close to the Città Antica that allow you to leave your car outside the ZTL and reach the centre on foot in just a few minutes.

Parcheggio Isolo – Via Ponte Pignolo. This is the closest to Piazza delle Erbe: just 470 metres away, or eight minutes on foot. It is small and always in high demand — arrive early, especially in summer when the opera season is in full swing.

Parcheggio Arsenale – Piazza Arsenale. Arsenale is roughly 11–12 minutes on foot from the heart of the historic centre. It sits on the eastern side of the centre, close to Veronetta: an excellent starting point if you want to walk along the Adige in the early morning, when the light on the water is still low and golden.

Parcheggio Verona – Piazza Cittadella 4. Parcheggio Cittadella is one of the closest car parks to Piazza Bra and the Arena, ideal for those who want to be in the centre straight away. Rates start from €1 for the first 20 minutes up to €21 per day. During events at the Arena and at the Teatro Filarmonico, closing time is extended to half an hour after the performance ends.

Parcheggio Centro (ex Gasometro) – Via Campo Marzo 371. The most affordable option by far: open 24 hours a day at €1 per hour, with a flat rate of €10 for 24 hours after 10 hours of parking. It is about 20 minutes on foot from Piazza Erbe, but the route along Corso Porta Nuova is straight, shaded and pleasant even in summer.

Zona Porta Nuova (side streets). Porta Nuova is the city's main railway station, and from here you can reach Piazza Bra and the Arena on foot, or by using public transport. Along the boulevards around the station you will find blue-marked pay bays with hourly rates: perfect for a short stay, payable via app.

How rates change in 2026: the new concentric zone map

The new Piano urbano della sosta introduces a concentric-zone scheme you should know before filing this guide away. The new tariff structure defines three zones: within the ZTL the rate is €2 per hour every day from 08:00 to 24:00; in the new Zona Blu, within 350–450 metres of the centre, the cost is €1.50 per hour from 08:00 to 20:00; in the outer Zona Azzurra, the rate drops to €1 per hour.

To put it simply: the further you move from the ZTL perimeter, the less you pay. The two-hour maximum limit is abolished and payment is introduced on weekends as well, in recognition of tourist footfall. So no more "Sunday morning is free": budget for parking on Saturdays and Sundays too.

A local tip: a reliable way to avoid penalties is to simulate your route on the sat-nav with an external ZTL car park set as your destination, checking that the suggested path does not pass through any controlled gates. The Tap&Park and EasyPark apps handle payment directly from your smartphone: no parking meter, no rushing back to move the car.

Do tourists staying inside the ZTL need to apply for a pass?

No: tourists staying at a hotel within the ZTL can enter by providing their licence plate number to the property. If your apartment is outside the ZTL, you park outside and walk — no permit required.

Is the ZTL active on Sundays?

On Saturdays and public holidays, entry can only be booked in the 10:00–13:30 time slot. Outside these hours, Sundays are subject to the same restrictions as weekdays — they are not "free" as many people assume.

Are there any free car parks near the centre?

Along Viale Galliano, just outside the city walls, there is one of the free car parks closest to the historic centre: it offers around a hundred spaces and lets you reach Castelvecchio and the Arena with a roughly 15-minute walk. At weekends and during peak season it tends to fill up quickly. Aim to arrive by 9:00 in the morning if you want to find a space.

If you are planning your stay in Verona and are looking for an apartment already positioned a stone's throw from the Arena — with no need to think about restricted zones — The Verona Stay has two properties in the heart of the historic centre, at Via Roma 21 and close to the Teatro Ristori. Book once, leave the car outside, and the historic centre becomes your neighbourhood.
