Everyone arrives at the Verona Christmas markets in the middle of the afternoon, wanders between the wooden stalls with a warm cup of mulled wine in hand, and leaves before dark falls. It's the most common mistake — and the most costly one in terms of atmosphere. Verona's markets are at their best during two precise windows of the day: the golden light of late afternoon and, immediately after, the blue hour of the winter dusk. Those who catch them bring home photos and memories worth twice as much.
When to Visit the Verona Christmas Markets 2025: Dates and Hours
The Verona Christmas Markets 2025 are open from 21 November to 28 December, spread across three locations in the historic centre: Piazza Bra (the main venue, this year for the first time directly beneath the Arena), Piazza dei Signori, and Piazza Sacco e Vanzetti at the Arsenale. This is the 17th edition, created in collaboration with the renowned Christkindlmarkt of Nuremberg.
Standard opening hours are: Sunday–Thursday from 10am to 9pm; Friday and Saturday from 10am to 11pm. Note the special hours: on 24 December the markets close at 5pm; on 25 and 26 December they open from 4pm. A local tip: for the golden light, aim for 3:30–4:30pm on a weekday; for the blue hour, stay until 5:00–5:45pm. Weekends are very crowded: a Tuesday or Wednesday in December is a far better choice.
The Stella Cometa: What to Do (Not Just Photograph) Beneath the World's Largest Archisculpture
Almost everyone knows it exists. Few people truly understand what those 70 metres of steel emerging from the Arena actually are. Architect Rinaldo Olivieri designed it while studying a map of the city: he perceived an ideal line between its two great urban voids, the Arena's cavea and Piazza Bra. From that intuition was born an arc of light and steel that departs from the temple of music and bursts open among the citizens. It was originally conceived as a one-time installation, in 1984, for the inauguration of the Rassegna dei Presepi in Arena. Today it holds a Guinness World Record as the largest archisculpture in the world.
The activity worth doing, not just admiring: position yourself on the pavement of the Giardini della Bra, at the corner towards Via Roma, about 20 minutes after sunset. The Stella lights up, the Arena turns the colour of burnt honey, the sky shifts to indigo. This is Verona's blue hour. No filter needed. No editing required. Just the right moment. Seasoned travellers consistently recommend weekday visits during the golden hour as the best time to experience the Verona Christmas market.
The Three-Piazza Route: How to Move Around (and What to Taste) Without Wasting an Hour
The Christkindlmarkt stalls are arranged in an "L" shape between the Arena and Palazzo Barbieri, creating a setting where tradition and architectural beauty meet. Start at Piazza Bra during the golden hour: the Scaligero façade of the Arena catches the low sun in spectacular fashion. Then walk up towards Piazza dei Signori — 5 minutes on foot — where the atmosphere is more intimate, the arcades more sheltered, the crowds thinner. At the Palazzo del Capitanio, accessible from Piazza Erbe and Piazza dei Signori, the 41st edition of the international exhibition "Presepi dal Mondo" is on show until 18 January 2026.
For essential warming up: the market stalls offer spiced mulled wine and pastries fragrant with cinnamon and chocolate. We are in the birthplace of pandoro — but at the stands you will also find sausages and sauerkraut in Nuremberg style, which fit in here rather naturally. A 2025 curiosity: the event is moving towards more sustainable management, with the elimination of printed brochures and an organised waste-collection system. A small gesture, but a meaningful one.
How to Get to the Markets Without the Stress?
Verona's city centre is a ZTL (restricted traffic zone) during December weekends. Leave your car at the Cittadella or Arena car parks (both a 5–10 minute walk from Piazza Bra). During the busiest weekends a free shuttle bus service is usually running to reach the historic centre. By train, Porta Nuova station is about 15 minutes on foot from Piazza Bra.
Is It Worth Going After Christmas Too?
The markets remain open until 28 December, offering more than a month of events and festive atmosphere. The period between 26 and 28 December is often underrated: fewer crowds than the pre-Christmas weekend rush, lights still glowing, prices unchanged. An excellent window for those who can make it.
If you are planning your stay, consider that from The Verona Stay Arena (Via Roma 21) you step out the door and find yourself less than two minutes from the Stella Cometa — close enough to come downstairs in your pyjamas to watch the blue hour, if the mood takes you.
